How to Easily Replace Your Kirby Vacuum Belt

Are you having trouble replacing your Kirby Vacuum belt? Well, in this video we will show you everything you'll need to know to do this at home.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

The first thing you want to do is lift up this lid.

If you look at the power head you will see a sticker. It has a green arrow labeled "belt on" and a red arrow labeled "belt off."

The round piece on the front is the belt lifter. If you look at the top you’ll see that it also has a green arrow.

Now lift the metal tab on the front of the belt lifter and it turns into a handle!

Now you can easily turn it to line up the red arrows.

Fold the tab back down and then turn the release lever. The power head will drop down.

Look inside the head and you’ll see that the belt is hooked around a hook. This is how the belt lifter removes the belt from the vacuum and allows you to remove the power head.

Turn the tabs on the power head to “unlock.”

Now you can remove the plate. This gives you full access to the brush roll and belt.

Grab the brush roll and belt and pull them out.

Slide the old belt off and then slide the new one on.

Pay close attention to the tabs on each side of the brush roll. They sides are numbered from 1 to 3 and one side is also larger than the other.

The numbers are fine adjustments for how high or low you want your brush roll to sit. If you have a really high pile carpet you’ll probably want them both on 1. If you have a lot of low pile carpet or hard floors you’ll probably want it on 3. Most of the time we have them on 2.

So set both of the tabs to the desired number. Slide the brush roll in. Remember that one side is larger than the other, so it only fits correctly one way!

To get the belt back on the hook, use your belt lifter and line up the green arrows.

Now grab your belt and hold it snug against the brush roll.

Turn the belt lifter towards red and you should be able to see and feel when it grabs the belt. Keep twisting until the red arrows are lined up.

Reinstall the plate on the bottom of the power head. The front slides into the slots on the power head and the two tabs go in the back.

Lock it in place.

To make the power head easier to get back on, raise the height of the vacuum all the way up with the height adjuster.

Hook the hooks on the back of the power head onto the bar on the vacuum.

Pivot it up and then lock it in place.

Turn the belt lifter to line up the green arrows.

Close the lid and you’re done!
